There are three distinct historic families within the Morgan breed. Both the Lambert and the Government families go directly back to Sherman Morgan on their sire line. The Woodbury family goes directly back to Woodbury on their sire line. The Lambert families'foundation stallion was Daniel Lambert, foaled in 1858. The Woodbury families' foundation stallion was Green Mountain Morgan, foaledin 1832. And the Government family foundation stallion was General Gates foaled in 1894. Although the Government's sire line isdifferent from the Lambert's, both go directly back to Sherman Morgan. The three Morgan families share many common ancestors although the blood of Sherman is by far the most predominate. Even theMorgans with the highest percent of Woodbury blood have more than 50% Sherman blood. The Lamberts and the Woodbury's have the highest percentage of Justin Morgan's blood.

"The Woodburys remain an energetic and strong-going Morgan family, one with the ability to endow its descendants with tenacity and trotting speed, whether it is used on the trotting tracks of the nineteenth century of the competitive trail rides of the twentieth." Mabel Owen
The venerable Edwin H. Hoffman (1858-1912) refers to Ethan Allen 2nd as belonging to the, 'GREEN MOUNTAIN FAMILY', (DONALD pg.13) which is akin to referring to the family that Daniel Lambert created as the 'LAMBERT FAMILY.' Sad to say that the Lippitt Club, in 1973, chose to change the name of the 'GREEN MOUNTAIN FAMILY' to honor Mr. Knight's mother's maiden name--Lippitt. And then the Lippitt Club proclaimed that the many historic Morgans belonging to the 'GREEN MOUNTAIN FAMILY' were to be refered to as 'LIPPITTS'. |

THE ANCIENT PEDIGREE OF CRITERION
Fifteen of the above Woodbury stallions appear in Criterion's six generation pedigree. John A. Darling is his grand-sire and Ethan Allen 3rd is his great-grand-sire on his sire's (Jubilee's Courage) pedigree. Ethan Allen 2nd appears twice as does Ethan the 3rd in his sixth generation.
No Morgan in the breed went back to Justin Morgan on his sire line in so few generations, eleven, as did CRITERION. He had as high a percentage of Justin Morgan as any Morgan in the breed.
